The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would sometimes break his sleep numerous times throughout the night, and certainly this is more difficult on the nafs, and therefore more rewarding. However, the time for tahajjud does begin after the Isha prayer, and for that person who cannot wake up, that is really the only option for them.
